Toyota RAV4 Wellesley

Travel Around Wellesley in a New Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 maintains its popular standing among compact SUVs, offering more than just a pleasant outward aspect. The RAV4 is a powerhouse on trails; its stability and traction pair well with other off-roading features to make it as capable on unpaved surfaces as it is on paved roads around Waltham.

There are five trim levels, a Limited, an Adventure, the LE and XLE and the XLE Premium. There's also a hybrid engine option that gives the RAV4 a competitive edge in its class for both fuel consumption and horsepower.

Drivers who want to include off-road exploration into their fun will appreciate the redesigned and generous ground clearance of over eight inches when fording streams and driving over rocks or logs. It also has reduced overhang measurements allowing for an approach angle of 19 degrees and a departure angle of 21 degrees. A Dynamic Torque Vecoring System that is new for 2019 delivers a calculated amount of torque to the wheels that need it most at any given moment for added traction.

Recalling the rugged exterior of Toyota trucks, the RAV4 seems set for any adventure around Cambridge. The front grille sits slightly below angled headlights and proudly displays the chrome-accented Toyota badge. Two round fog lights frame the front bumper, positioned for optimal illumination.

Wheels come in 17- or 19-inch diameters, depending on the trim level. Overhead, a foundation is in place for adding a roof rack to increase gear storage. The no-nonsense rear has an aerodynamic spoiler mounted above the rear window that provides a subtle sense of style. Dual exhaust pipes frame each corner, set below bar-shaped brake lights that wrap around the side.

The interior of the RAV4 focuses on the central console, its seven-inch touchscreen prominently displaying information, entertainment or navigation options. Dual bucket seats cushion both driver and front passenger in extra comfort. A console for holding gear and drinks divides the two seats, with further storage available in bins set into the doors. Rear seating consists of a single bench capable of holding up to three people. The cargo area measures 37 cubic feet but can be extended to nearly 70 cubic feet when lowering the rear seats.

Like others in its class, the 2.5-liter engine provides 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Up to 3,500 pounds of towing capacity allows for bringing all-terrain vehicles or personal watercraft along for adventures across Waltham and Newton. The transmission is an eight-speed automatic in all trims including the hybrid, although the hybrid has an inline four-cylinder engine that produces slightly higher horsepower.

Other perks include a wireless charging pad, Wi-Fi connectivity and five USB ports placed throughout the cabin. Higher trim levels upgrade the touchscreen to an eight-inch display. Front seats receive both ventilation and heating. A premium 800-watt sound system by JBL includes excellent sound representation from 11 speakers placed throughout the cabin.

The safety options on the RAV4 include an impressive list of features that come standard to every trim level. Forward detectors analyze the road constantly for pedestrians or fixed objects and alert the driver in the event a collision is imminent. This feature pairs with an automatic emergency braking feature that will apply the brakes to avoid a collision or will stop the car after a collision has occurred in order to mitigate further damage. Rear sensors warn of cross-traffic movement when backing up around Boston. Drivers will also receive an alert when departing lanes unexpectedly over a certain speed. The RAV4 can analyze road signs to alert the driver of trouble ahead.
